Press Releases
Lynx Racing Graduate Alex Barron Joins Red
Bull Cheever Racing
Lynx Racing graduate Alex Barron will drive the Red Bull Cheever
Racing No. 52 Dallara/Chevrolet this weekend in the Delphi
Indy 300 at Chicagoland Speedway. Barron replaces Buddy Rice
-- also a Lynx graduate -- who remains with Red Bull Cheever
Racing.
"We needed to make a change to get back in the game,"
said Eddie Cheever Jr., the team's owner. "Buddy is still
under contract with our team and I consider him an asset.
We have a powerful new Chevy engine and a top-notch pit crew
that have been working hard all year. We're moving ahead and
preparing for the future as the 2003 season nears an end.
This is not a driver being fired; it's a driver being hired.
It's a positive step solely designed to get results."
Barron has won two IRL IndyCar Series races in his career,
including the Firestone Indy 400 earlier this season at Michigan
International Speedway. He finished sixth at the Indianapolis
500 in May and fifth in the Firestone Indy 200 at Nashville
Superspeedway. He scored five race victories with Lynx in
1997, winning the Toyota Atlantic championship and the series'
Rookie of the Year award in the same season. In 1998
he graduated to the seat of Dan Gurney's All-American Racers
Champ Car, where he spent a season and a half. Since
then he has also raced with Marlboro Team Penske and was the
2002 Indy 500 Rookie of the Year.
Red Bull Cheever Racing stands 12th in IRL IndyCar Series
standings after 13 of 16 races this season. The Delphi Indy
300 is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Central Daylight Time
and will be televised live on ABC.
